Silver moss is made up of green plants growing so closely together that they resemble pads of greenery. Often,Silver Moss resembles a grove of closely growing trees. Silver Moss grows extensively throughout West Virginiaand the Laurel Lake area.

All mosses are related to ferns. Moss grows on land indamp areas and on rocks and trees. A single moss plant has tiny leaves growing from a stem. Tiny roots called rhizoidsgrow from the bottom of the stems.

New Silver Moss plants are formed by sexual and asexual reproduction.

All mosses are soil builders because the rootlets break up rock. Rock particles and decaying parts of the moss make fertile soil. Silver Moss holds rain and prevents run off.On the surface, new Silver Moss grows over dead moss.
